MIDP

The Master Information Delivery Plan (MIDP) is one of those BIM tools that is often requested in BIM projects but rarely used in practice. A well-developed MIDP can significantly improve project transparency and the final outcome.
Simply put, the MIDP is a list of all files or deliverables that must be submitted at each project reporting milestone. It acts as a kind of "roadmap" for information. When properly structured, the MIDP provides the client with two key benefits:
Clarity at the beginning
Before any work begins, the client can easily assess whether the supplier understands what needs to be delivered and when. This is the moment to identify what is missing. For example, in one project, our client noticed in time that important calculation reports were not included in the MIDP. The supplier didn’t even know they were required.
Control during the process
When a reporting milestone is reached, the client can compare the MIDP with the actual files available in the common data environment. This is a quick and objective way to verify that everything promised has indeed been delivered.
To make the MIDP work effectively, a few important principles must be followed:
- The initial MIDP will never be complete – it must be updated throughout the project.
- The current version of the MIDP must be submitted at each reporting milestone.
- The MIDP must be structured and easy to read (most commonly in Excel format).
A good MIDP is not just a form or an attachment. It is a tool that ensures the quality and reliability of information throughout the BIM project lifecycle. And for the client, it can be far more valuable than it might seem at first glance.
